As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Knowles has a mission to provide state-of-the-art, proven, evidence-based psychological interventions. These interventions are backed by research and typically involve education and active participation by those desperate for change in their lives. Through treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT), Dr. Knowles explains that positive and negative thoughts about an event determine the emotional response to the event, ultimately affecting how we respond to various situations. CBT examines the automatic thoughts which commonly contain bias or cognitive distortions that perpetuate negative emotions such as depression, anxiety and anger. When negative emotions are long-standing, they don't just affect us emotionally, they also start to affect us physically, with sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration problems. Through techniques such as cognitive restructuring, we can develop new ways of thinking which lead to more positive emotions and better mental and physical health. Through another intervention such as stress reduction instruction, Dr. Knowles guides his clients through the techniques of diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and visual imagery. As a military veteran and clinical psychologist, Dr. Knowles has a unique understanding of stress, anxiety and fear. After graduating from class 106 from the Navy's Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training Program (BUDS), he served out the remainder of his enlistment with the Underwater Demolition Team ELEVEN with primary duties as a pilot of a SEAL Delivery Vehicle. He operated in several foreign countries such as Korea, Thailand and the Philippines, and was given a Good Conduct Award and an Honorable Discharge. The experiences gained working with people abroad have only strengthened his understanding and concern for humanity in general. As such, he has dedicated his life to improving the psychological and physical wellbeing of all who seek to better their situation and lives.
